Vision Dice Tower Update #7: Big Progress on Hardware, Software, and the Final Tower Design

Hey everyone — it’s time for another Vision Dice Tower update, and we’ve got a lot of progress to share.
A lot of the work happening right now is the behind-the-scenes kind, but it’s bringing us much closer to a production-ready tower.
The PCB is getting very close
As we shared previously, we made the decision to move toward a custom PCB so we could better control cost, performance, and long-term supply.
Josh has made a huge amount of progress on that work.
The board was able to pass 11 out of 12 tests, with the one remaining challenge being the camera — which was the area we were most concerned about from the beginning.
That was where we reached the edge of what we could reasonably solve on our own.
Fortunately, Josh connected with an electrical engineer who has been working closely with him to solve the problem. After a lot of testing and troubleshooting, we had a successful camera test this week.
That was a major milestone.
We’re now ordering a new round of boards so we can test the entire system together. Once those boards are validated, we’ll be able to make the final physical adjustments to the tower around the new PCB and camera lens.
One final tower design adjustment
The tower print itself had been finalized, but the new PCB and lens configuration means we need to make one more targeted update to the physical design.
The good news is that this is not a redesign.
Once the new boards arrive and we confirm the final hardware layout, we’ll make the necessary adjustment for the PCB and lens and move forward with the final production design.
A major software improvement
We’ve also made an important change on the software side.
Originally, our plan was to host the dice-reading model in the cloud, which would have required the tower to communicate with that service to process rolls.
We’ve now found a way to keep the model contained within the software itself.
That change has already resulted in:
- Faster roll processing
- Improved accuracy
- Less dependence on cloud processing
We’re continuing to improve the accuracy of the system with the updated tower and camera setup.
We’re also expanding how the software understands actual D&D gameplay.
The software already handles many of the standard roll types, but we’re now working on support for things like Bless, Guidance, Bardic Inspiration, and similar modifiers so those effects can be included naturally as part of the roll instead of requiring a separate roll afterward.
That means fewer extra steps, less interruption, and a smoother experience when you’re actually playing.
New commercials are rolling out
We’ve also finished work on several new Vision Dice Tower commercials.
We’ll begin releasing them on YouTube starting this week, and we’re planning to roll out roughly one new video each week over the next few weeks.
We’re excited to finally have more polished content that shows both the product and the bigger idea behind what we’re building.
Cleaning up our website
We’ve also been spending time updating and cleaning up the Order of the Dice website.
As the Vision Dice Tower gets closer to production, we want the website to do a better job of explaining the product, supporting new customers, and giving people a clear place to follow what we’re working on.
There’s still more to do, but it’s another piece of getting everything ready for the next phase.
Delivery timeline
Even with the hardware changes and the additional engineering work, we are still working toward our December delivery timeframe for backers.
There is still work to do, particularly around validating the new PCB and making the final tower adjustments, but at this point we are continuing to plan around that December target.
As always, if anything changes materially, we’ll tell you.
Late pledges are still open
If you missed the original campaign and still want a Vision Dice Tower, late pledges are still open on Kickstarter.
Our current plan is for those late-pledge towers to be included in the same December delivery timeframe.
Help us spread the word
One of the biggest things you can do to help us right now is simply share the project.
If you know someone who plays D&D online, uses a VTT, streams tabletop games, or just loves rolling real dice, please send them our Kickstarter or one of the new videos as they start coming out.
Every share helps us reach more of the people we built this for.
Thank you
A lot of what we’ve been solving lately is the unglamorous part of turning a prototype into a real product — boards, lenses, tolerances, testing, software architecture, and manufacturing details.
But every one of those pieces gets us closer.
Thank you for continuing to support us, follow the project, and give us the opportunity to build this the right way.
