Meros Vael

Meros Vael was born into House Vael, a noble family whose wealth, estates, and political influence extend throughout Willsforth and the surrounding region.

Although legitimate by blood, Meros was never fully embraced by his family. His tiefling heritage and unsettling presence made him difficult for the Vaels to cherish, so instead they learned to make him useful.

From an early age, Meros showed both sorcerous talent and an exceptional ability to read people. House Vael trained him in etiquette, rhetoric, history, contracts, and household politics while shaping him into someone capable of handling delicate situations. He learned how to charm when necessary, intimidate without raising his voice, and leave others feeling that they had revealed more than they intended.

Meros eventually stopped seeking the affection his family rarely offered. Instead, he learned to manage people, calculate risks, and keep others at a comfortable distance.

His faith in Xavian was different. It was never imposed upon him. As a sorcerer, Meros saw magic as the one thing that belonged entirely to him, beyond the control of House Vael or anyone else. His devotion to the God of Magic deepened as the heavens fractured and magic throughout Verivar began to change.

Recently, House Vael gave Meros his first true measure of authority. He was entrusted with stewardship of Blackthorn Hall near Willsforth and oversight of the Blackthorn Exchange, a family enterprise dealing in hunting rights, rare hides, magical reagents, monster remains, and dangerous recoveries.

The appointment is both an opportunity and a test. If Meros succeeds, greater authority within House Vael may follow. If he fails, it will confirm every quiet doubt his family has ever held about him.

Because of this responsibility, Willsforth is more than a place Meros happens to live. He knows its streets, factions, influential families, neglected corners, and the dangers respectable people prefer to ignore. House Vael has worked with Darren Voss for years when business required tracking, recovery, or dealing with threats beyond ordinary hands, and Darren now knows that Vael business in the region goes through Meros.

Meros also knows Xyriel Naqara by reputation and passing familiarity and is aware of Elias Varn as another magically gifted figure around Willsforth, though he has not yet formed a close relationship with either of them.

Now, as the world begins to fracture and the night sky itself turns wrong, Meros stands at Blackthorn Hall as a noble heir on trial, a sorcerer devoted to Xavian, and a man who has learned to wield charm, fear, and control far more easily than affection.

For perhaps the first time in his life, he is responsible for more than himself.
