Xyriel Naqara

Xyriel Naqara was born on the outskirts of Willsforth, where the last crooked lanes of town give way to the shadowed forests of Eiklidore. Her mother was a herbalist who supplied remedies to the town apothecary, while her father worked as a woodcutter and occasional guide.

From childhood, Xyriel followed them into the woods. She learned which plants soothed fever, which ones blistered skin, and which trails could still lead home after dark.

When Xyriel was about nine, a pack of lesser fiends attacked a caravan on the old road near Willsforth. By the time she and her father reached the scene, local monster hunter Darren Voss was already there, driving the last of the creatures away.

Instead of recoiling from what she saw, Xyriel stayed near Darren and questioned him until dawn. She wanted to know what the creatures were, why they had come so close to town, and how he knew where to strike them.

Over the following years, Darren allowed her to accompany him on the edges of his work. At first, she carried gear and learned the basics of tracking, reading animal behavior, and moving quietly through the wilderness. As she grew older, he began training her in earnest.

Xyriel soon found herself caught between Willsforth and the wilds beyond it. The town was expanding, becoming louder and more controlled, while the forest remained unpredictable and alive. She found larger cities especially uncomfortable. Their stone streets, schedules, crowded markets, and carefully arranged gardens felt artificial compared with the honest danger and constant change of the wilderness.

Her outlook changed further when Willsforth began pushing deeper into the surrounding forest for farmland and timber. Logging disturbed dens, migration routes, and rare plants, causing monster activity to surge.

Working alongside Darren, Xyriel learned that many so-called monster problems were not random. A displaced forest drake, a threatened basilisk nesting ground, or an angry dryad often had a reason for acting as they did.

She came to see herself not simply as a hunter, but as someone responsible for maintaining the fragile balance between civilization and the wild.

Xyriel chose to remain in the border forests rather than move into town. She lives in a modest cabin nearly swallowed by moss and ivy and continues to work with Darren when creatures stray too close to roads or farms.

Just as often, she travels alone with her staff and bow, observing changes in the land and listening for signs that something is wrong.

Travelers around Willsforth sometimes describe her as half-feral, Darren Voss’s protégé, or even someone capable of speaking with beasts.

The truth is simpler.

Xyriel remains in the forests because she believes the land needs its own kind of guardian—someone who understands both monsters and people and who is willing, more often than not, to stand with the wild.
